Kalpitiya, the Best Destination to learn Kitesurfing in flat and shallow water

Sri Lanka can be considered among Vietnam one of the top kitesurfing destinations in South Asia. The Kalpitiya lagoon is the main kite spot in Sri Lanka and one of the best kite destinations in the world. This kite spot, with flat and shallow water, is a very easy spot for learning kitesurfing and the best option for freestyle riders.

How to get Kalpitiya from the Airport

Kalpitiya is located around 250 Km north from Negombo airport. The fastest option to get Kalpitiya is by a private vehicle, which will cost around 50 euros and it will take a 3 hours’ drive. There are other options like public buses that can be cheaper but slower.

Any bus heading north From Colombo or Negombo airport to Jaffna, Mannar, Anuradhapura and Puttalam can be taken. Once in Palavi town there is another bus going up to Kalpitiya. There is also a train with the route Negombo-Palavi that sometimes can be a little bit faster that getting a train

What are the Best Kitesurfing spots in Kalpitiya?

Among the Kalpitiya lagoon, there are other perfect spots to master your kitesurfing technique as most of them are spots with flat water.

Vella island is considered the best spot in the world with flat and shallow water. Located 45 minutes by boat from Kalpitiya, it is the perfect place for kite progression. This spot is well known among some worldwide champions like Mikaili Soil that come here regularly for kitesurfing training

Other kitesurfing spots located very near kalpitiya are the Dream spot, the Kappaladi lagoon or the Donkey Point.

The kitesurfing teaching area which is also the main spot for landing and launching is located in a very narrow beach separated from the ocean by a strip of sand. There are no hotels and kite schools in this spot. As it is a protected coastal area there are no buildings around.

The kitesurfing schools have some beach huts where to keep the equipment during the day and at the end of the day they pick up all they equipment until the next day.

Recommended Kitesurfing camp in Kalpitiya

It is highly recommended the Margarita kite school Kalpitiya, a kitesurfing school and a kite camp located 5 min away by jeep to Kalpitiya lagoon. All kitesurfing instructors are certified by IKO and always very patient and professional.

The Margarita kite school has actually 2 camps: The Margarita Village, with 4 timber bungalows and one family and the MKS (Margarita Kite School) with 4 very nice villas.
